Parker's Prom
We received a very inspiring presentation from Chowchilla Lioness Liz Bockop. Parker's Prom is a Prom event held at Children's Hospital for children with Cancer who maybe unable to attend their own prom. Lion Liz lost her son Parker to Leukemia after the first Parker's Prom and has continued to work on this event for the children at Valley Children's Hospital.
After the Presentation Lion President Wally Reached deep into the President's budget donated $1000 and the Board submitted an additional $500. All together The Madera Evening Lions Club donated $1500 to Parker's Prom to cover Lion Liz's greatest expense for the evening the Food for all of the attendees. Children's Hospital must do all of the catering so there are no corners that can be cut for the safety of the patients.
The Now defunct Fresno Falcons would participate in previous years as escorts for the young ladies with out dates and big brothers for the little men. As they are no longer they will be missed at this year's event. If any Lion has contacts to any group that can participate please Contact Lion Liz Bockop of the Chowchilla Lioness Lions Club.

Luau Gone Country - Committee Meeting
As the date quickly approaches (SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2008) we will have weekly committee meetings for the Luau gone country. A number of Lions have notified the club that they will be out of town for the event, this does not mean they can not support the event. Every Lion should still be able to sell 8 - 10 tickets. I am sure every Lion has supported another clubs event and as they say tit for tat. October does look like a busy month for Madera as the Moonlight Madness and the Rotary Halloween ball is in the same month. But, look on the bright side. Madera has grown to 55,000 people that is a whole lot of people. We need to expand our base and begin approaching some of the New blood in town.
Talk TALK TALK. Talk about the LUAU GONE COUNTRY with as many people as possible. We are getting support from the Madera Method Wagon train and they have many supporters so again look at the bigger picture.
LUAU GONE COUNTRY committee Meeting -Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Roundtable 6:00pm. SEE YAWL THERE!

Summary of 9/10/08 Meeting
Lion President Wally rang in the meeting to order with the newly repaired Lions Bell (brass is not as tough as it appears to be.) Praise and thanks was given to all who helped and attended the Grandparents Breakfast and the Leo Car Wash. Nishimoto Elementary presented the Evening Lions Club with a poster thanking us for our service and we are invited to help again next year.
The MD-4 convention will be held in Fresno on February 13-15, 2009. The Madera Evening Lions Club has a standing policy of sponsoring members expenses for hotel stays of one night (note: if both spouses are members of the Evening Lions Club that is 2 nights.) International President is scheduled to attend and be a keynote speaker. The MD-4A1 district will be in April and we are also encouraged to attend this convention. Our tailtwister better get busy raising up the general fund!
The Madera Police Department Outreach program thanked the Madera Evening Lions Club and the Madera Leo Club for helping with the Kids Back to school Backpack program. Officer Wasson Juarez thanked us for our continued support and reviewed some of the proposed changes to the Madera Police Department Community Christmas. With budgets being tightened they are expecting less revenue to put on the event. We expressed our support for their efforts and promised to help whatever way we can.
Next Meeting is Wednesday September 24th.

Leo Car Wash Great Success!
I want to thank everyone who helped us in the car wash and for all of your support. The Leo kids worked so hard and we lost count of all the cars they washed. Thank you to Austin, Nita, and David who worked just as hard if not harder than the kids. Thank you to Terry and Daryl for staying and helping with the collecting of the money. Thank you to all Lions who sold tickets and donated out of your own pockets, it was really touching for me to see you do that. Now for the results, after expenses we profited$ 1,525.00, can you believe that? This is going to buy so many shoes for needy kids in our community. I was that needy child so many years ago and you wonderful people bought me a new pair of shoes today, Thank you. Lion Rose

Boy Scouts Deliver a Speech of Thanks to the Evening Lions Club

Carolyn Lillis and Kevin Friedrich of the Boy Scouts of America spoke to our club at the meeting on Wednesday, August 27. Carolyn is the Scoutmaster for Troop 115, the Troop who helped us work the Little League Booth this past season. She thanked us for our support of her Troop and with the aid of those funds were able to send 8 Scouts to Summer Camp. A majority of the scouts within her Troop are from underprivileged homes and benefited greatly from our contributions.
Kevin briefly spoke of the Boy Scouts Of America general program and recognized Lion Bill Wescott and Lion Wally Nishimoto for their work in Boy Scouts. Lion Bill has over 55 years in scouting. Boy Scouts provides boys of all ages with experiences not available at home by opening up their horizons. Teaching them Leadership skills. And providing them with insights to career opportunities.
The Troop 115 Scouts are looking forward to next baseball season hoping they can help us again.

Speaker scheduled for Wednesday August 27 meeting
We have Kevin Freidrich scheduled to speak to our happy group at the meeting this Wednesday August 27th. He will speak to us about Local Boy Scout Activities and how we can help. We actually contribute quite a bit right now. We have supported two Boy Scout Troops and the Cub Scout Camp here in Madera. I thought it would be good to hear from some of the groups we have been working with.
See you at the Meeting. Remember the bell rings at 6:10 pm

Summary of District Meeting
The district cabinet has declared that the quarterly district gatherings shall be known as District Meetings from here on forward. District Governor Pat Casey Gillum led a very informative and fun meeting. DG Gillum spoke of a speach by the International President Brandell he wanted to remind Lions that our motto is not"We write a check" but "WE SERVE." He asks that besides giving money to the food bank maybe also help distribute the food collected. Or help serve at the rescue mission. Something we all need to remember. And when we do SERVE the community we should promote Lions Club by wearing our vest, caps, or shirts.
This was my first district meeting in a long time. IT was actually fun to get back to one of these meetings as it is a gathering of Lions. Everyone there is dedicated to Lionism and are great examples of what a Lion Member can accomplish. It was very inspiring and informative.
Lions Rose Bowl Float - PDG Jon Casteel spoke about the Lions Float and why Lions International supports. The Parade is broadcasted across the nation and around the world and seen by millions of people. Last year one person who saw the float could only hear about the float as he was legally blind, his sons had to describe the float to. As it passed the father asked do you think the Lions could help me? A few phone calls the following week and the Santa Ana Lions Club stepped up and sent the man for Eye Surgery. He can now see and his sons have joined Lions Club. Stuff like that happens for a reason, we Lions step up when we need to and promoting Lions Club and our programs is part of it.
I would like to encourage all of our members to try to attend these in the future. Even the DG is promoting general members to attend the district meetings. She has donated a cruise to be given away as an incentive. Every Lion in attendance is given a drawing ticket at each district meeting and the winner will be drawn at the Spring Meeting. That is a nice perk but I think all of our members would actually enjoy attending a meeting or two.
They also issued some of the dates for district events and I will be posting that later.

Fall Fundraising Project has New Chair
Lion Anne and Lion Raul Lozano have voluntered to chair the new fall fundraiser. What is the fundraiser? Well the theme is not quite set yet but it will be a dinner dance at this point. As Lion Anne and Lion Raul nail down specifics we will get the new out.
Remember the toughest part of putting out on a dinner party is SELLING TICKETS. Once we get the tickets out please try to sell sell sell. We will also be doing silent auctions and maybe a live auction if we aquire anything really superb.
We will maintain the Top Shelf image our events have had. So we can continue to attrat the same folnks that have always upported our events.
Thank You Lion Anne and Lion Raul for stepping up. I appreciate you sharing your busy time with us and helping us put on a succeful fundraiser.
